Where can I find a dentist that treats bad breath?
Although bad-breath specialists are increasing in number, you should always express your concern with your general dentist. They are educated in every aspect of dental health, even the oral causes of bad breath (halitosis). If your dentist feels like they cannot accurately address your issue, he/she may devise an alternative treatment options. This may include referring you to a periodontist if you halitosis is caused by gum disease, or a visit to your general physician to see if your bad breath is caused by an underlying medical condition.
Some dentists tend to take a holistic approach to bad breath treatment and may suggest nutritional supplementation in conjunction with proper diet and regular exercise. Additionally, if you feel that your dentist is not living up to your standard of care, you can contact your state dental association to see what other resources are available in your county and state.
I do not think my bad breath is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. Where can I get effective products that treat my breath on the surface?
Once your dentist has determined the cause of your halitosis, he/she can prescribe or recommend products based on your individual need. They will likely recommend products that carry the American Dental Association's Seal of Acceptance. Of Note: The ADA does not support any claims made by manufacturers who produce "halitosis kits." As always, if you have a question about a given product that has not been accepted by the ADA, asking your dentist for their opinion will likely prove to be the best course of action.
You mentioned genetic predisposition with bad breath. How is bad breath hereditary?
The key factor influenced by genetic predisposition that may cause your bad breath, believe it or not, is the shape of your tongue. You cannot inherit sulfur producing bacteria, nor are you born with horrible breath! However, you can inherit deeps groves down the middle of your tongue, as well and longer fibers that make up your tongue called papillae. Both of these hereditary conditions have been proven to trap more bacteria, and consequently, make the odor of your breath worse.
So you cant give your bad breath to anyone else?
That's correct; you cannot give bad breath to, or catch bad breath from, anyone.
